Many Bassets are bibliophiles from puppyhood on. The dog-eared book is often the dog-chewed book, at least in our house.

    That's why it behooves Basset humans to keep their books off the floor.  "The dog ate my homework" is not just a tired old lie in the Basset household. Some professors have been known to find their missing gradebooks out under the hastas in the yard after hours of frantic search.

    Sadly, the breed does not excel at reading; however, sit down in your recliner with a book on your lap, and you'll soon have a companion at your side and a Basset chin resting on the page.
