You have to keep your eye on even the sweetest, well-mannered Basset, because sooner or later the "dark side" of the breed's personality will surface. In this case, we have a dog who has sneaked out into the garden, seated herself on a clump of monkey grass, and started eating a carefullly cultivated bloom.

Maisy thinks we can't see her savaging the ornamental grasses in her own yard. This is because, like many tri-colors, she continually goes about in "camo"--a visual manifestation of the sneakiness gene.

Fortunately for the human gardener , Bassets have short attention spans, and their dark hearts are often overtaken by competing personality traits--like love of sleep or howling at fire sirens or trash-talking with the dogs next door.  Within minutes Maisy will wander out into the sun and indulge in one or more of these activities--allowing the grass to rebound.

Lass in the Grass is an 8 x 10"  full-color paint proof I did in preparation for the commissioned painting, "Mischief in the Monkey Grass."  By doing it first, I was able to learn what worked and didn't work with the grass background and also to rework the dog, add a little weight, lengthen the ears, deepen the chest, reduce the forehead, and make other changes at the owner's suggestion (and with additional photos) to make Maisy look like Maisy.

Maisy now shares a home with a Moby, of Boy with Toy fame!
