Bassets are energetic hunters, when the prey is small and not too fierce, like a lone rabbit or beetle. But wild geese are another matter. Geese hiss and flap their wings and they're flock-protected, kind of like a pack.
So this pair decided to view the birds from afar, behind a stone wall they ordinarily leap over without a moment's thought. Sometimes spectator sports have their advantages.

This painting started out as an early exercise for me at the Schuler School of Fine Art. I was to copy German-American master painter Edmund Osthaus's "Setters on Point." Obviously, I digressed. His prints are not available here.
